“We offer our unwavering support to HIP in its noble pursuit of education, awareness, and unity. It is organizations like HIP that light the path for all Canadians as we move forward together in the spirit of understanding and respect,” said Shannon Henderson, president of Orange Shirt Society, acknowledging the initiative dedicated to fostering cultural understanding, reconciliation, and personal growth among Indigenous and non-Indigenous youth from across the country.
This year, participants will gather at Six Nations of the Grand River, Ontario, to immerse themselves in a unique learning experience guided by Indigenous Elders who will share traditional land-based teachings passed down through generations. Participants will also be mentored toward building a sustainable future rooted in respect, connection, and action.
Jonas Alcantara, who participated in the program in 2024 when he was a Grade 10 student, says the experience of listening to Elders and Knowledge Keepers, who shared the generational challenges and resilience of their cultures has a had a profound effect on him. He says hearing these stories firsthand was both emotional and enlightening for him.
