Karihwake (Tim) Thompson
Karihwakeron Tim Thompson is from the Mohawk Nation at Wáhta Mohawk Territory and is a respected Indigenous leader, educator, and advocate for language rights, education, and community well-being. His work spans decades of national and regional leadership, organizational development, and cultural revitalization.
Karihwakeron has served in numerous influential roles, including Policy Director at the Ontario Federation of Indian Friendship Centres, Education Coordinator for the Chiefs of Ontario, Education Director and later Director of Languages at the Assembly of First Nations, and President and Chief Administrative Officer of First Nations Technical Institute. He has also contributed to the creation and growth of several important Indigenous organizations, including the Enaahtig Healing Lodge and Learning Centre, the International Indigenous Recognition of Prior Learning Collective, and HIP (Honouring Indigenous Peoples).
He currently serves as Chair of the Wáhta Mohawk Community Trust, sits on the Board of Advisors for the Yellowhead Institute, and works with the Language Defenders to advance legal recognition and protection of Indigenous language rights. His leadership consistently emphasizes sovereignty, education, and the cultural foundations essential for strong Nations.
In addition to his governance and advisory roles, Karihwakeron teaches courses on Indigenous cultures, histories, and contemporary issues, and supports Indigenous organizations with strategic planning grounded in community priorities and cultural values. A lifelong language learner, he is a proud graduate of the Onkwawén:na Kentióhkwa Kanienkéha/Mohawk language immersion program, reflecting his deep commitment to language revitalization and the responsibilities that come with it.
Karihwakeron was recognized nationally as one of twelve defenders of human rights in the Speak Truth to Power initiative, acknowledging his leadership, advocacy, and dedication to uplifting Indigenous voices.
As a member of the Board for HIP, Karihwakeron brings extensive experience in Indigenous governance, education, language revitalization, and community development. His cultural knowledge, strategic insight, and lifelong service strengthen HIP’s mission to honour Indigenous Peoples, support Indigenous youth, and build meaningful, respectful relationships across Canada.
