Newell Johnson, a proud member of Eskasoni First Nation, is a longtime educator and advocate for Indigenous education, language, and wellness. A fluent Mi’kmaq speaker – with English as her second language – Newell brings deep cultural knowledge and a commitment to lifelong learning to every role she holds. She continues to strengthen her connection to Mi’kmaq culture while supporting the next generation in reclaiming identity, confidence, and well-being.
Newell began her career in 1999 as a high school science teacher and has since served as a math teacher, vice-principal, and, for the past fourteen years, the full-time principal of Chief Allison Bernard Memorial High School (formerly Eskasoni High School). Her leadership is grounded in community values, high expectations for student success, and a belief that culturally grounded education is essential for strong, healthy Nations.
Her academic background reflects both breadth and depth: she holds a Bachelor of Arts, a Bachelor of Science, a Bachelor of Education, a Master’s in Special Education, and a Master’s in Mathematics. She has also completed Yoga Teacher Training and is currently pursuing a Master’s in Indigenous Studies, strengthening her ability to integrate Indigenous ways of knowing into school environments.
As Principal of Chief Allison Bernard Memorial High School, Newell recently introduced the groundbreaking Boys Wellness Program, an initiative designed to support the mental, physical, emotional, and cultural well-being of young Indigenous men. This program reflects her dedication to creating safe, supportive, and empowering spaces for students, and her belief in community-led solutions that honour Indigenous teachings.
As a member of the HIP Board, Newell brings extensive experience in Indigenous education, language revitalization, wellness programming, and youth empowerment. Her leadership strengthens HIP’s mission to support Indigenous youth, honour Indigenous identities, and build meaningful, respectful relationships across Canada.
