Welcoming New Leadership: Newell Johnson Joins the HIP Board

July 16, 2024 – Wolfville, NS – Honouring Indigenous Peoples (HIP) is delighted to announce the appointment of Newell Johnson as the newest member of our Board of Directors. Newell Johnson, hailing from Eskasoni First Nation, brings a wealth of experience and dedication to Indigenous education and wellness.

Newell is a fluent Mi’kmaq speaker (English is her second language) and enjoys learning about her culture. “I take pride in my culture and it is something I try to instill in my students. I engage the students to give back and serve our community such as Interact, Elder Safety Program and volunteering at various events.”.

She started in 1999 as a high school science teacher and has held several roles over her career specifically math teacher, vice-principal and currently is the full-time principal for the past fourteen years at Chief Allison Bernard Memorial High School (formerly known as Eskasoni High School). Her education background is diverse: a Bachelor of Arts, Bachelor of Science, Bachelor of Education, Masters in Special Education, Masters in Mathematics, Yoga Teacher Training and is currently enrolled in Masters in Indigenous Studies.

As the Principal of Chief Allison Bernard Memorial High School, Newell has recently implemented a groundbreaking Boys Wellness Program, designed to support the mental, physical, and emotional well-being of young Indigenous men. This initiative aligns seamlessly with HIP’s mission to promote the health, education, and well-being of Indigenous communities across Canada.

“We are thrilled to welcome Newell Johnson to our Board,” said John Currie, Executive Director of HIP. “Her innovative approach to education and commitment to wellness make her an invaluable addition to our team. We look forward to her contributions as we continue to honour and support Indigenous Peoples.”

Newell Johnson’s leadership and vision have already made a significant impact in her community, and we are excited to see how her expertise will further enhance HIP’s efforts.
