In 2016, the Rotary Club of Oakville Trafalgar initiated a Rotary scholarship to be awarded in co-ordination with the University of Sudbury to a mature Indigenous student entering second, third or fourth year. The scholarship provides $7,000/year until graduation. The Rotary Club of Burlington partnered and continues with support of the program.

In 2018, Sonnie Debassige was second recipient of the scholarship. Sonnie (M’Chigeeng) from Manitoulin Island studied Indigenous Studies and is looking forward to returning in the fall to complete her degree. She teaches leather and beadwork to high school students on the Island during the summer and participates in pow wows.
Sonny says “You have brought great joy for me and my family by bestowing this (award) upon me. My father was so proud of my accomplishment“.
