Hailey Sutherland Awarded Scholarship

In 2016, the Rotary Club of Oakville Trafalgar initiated a Rotary scholarship to be awarded in co-ordination with the University of Sudbury to a mature Indigenous student entering second, third or fourth year. The scholarship provides $7,000/year until graduation. The Rotary Club of Burlington Lakeshore partnered and continues with support of the program.

The club continues to look for additional clubs in the district to join the scholarship program. Please contact the club for details.

In 2019, the scholarship partnered with the Rotary Club of Oakville. With the increased support, a student would be selected each year receiving $5,000/year until graduation. The growth would allow 3 students/year to be enrolled.

Hailey Sutherland is Nishnawbe (Oji-Cree) from Lake Constance/Windsor and was selected in 2019. She is studying Developmental Psychology and completed her second year this spring. After graduation, Hailey will undertake her Master’s and PhD in Psychology before returning to First Nation communities to work in mental health.

Hailey says “The scholarship will help immensely as I want to continue my education. My dream to go back to my community with the tools and education I need is much more a reality”.

Hailey recently spoke to the club via zoom meeting.

We wish Hailey success in her career!
