HIP board member Tom Herman honoured with True Rotarian Award

Tom Herman, HIP board member and past-president of the Rotary Club of Wolfville-Mud Creek, has been recognized with the prestigious True Rotarian Award.

The award celebrates members who embody Rotary’s spirit of service, humility, and commitment to the 4-Way Test.

Known for his humility, passion, and dedication, Herman was praised by fellow club member John McNeil as someone who “speaks with frankness, sincerity and sympathy — and listens to all opinions.”

A professor emeritus at Acadia University, Herman has spent four decades studying the relationship between humans and biodiversity, with a focus in recent years on biodiversity in southwest Nova Scotia.

As a Rotarian, Herman has served in multiple roles, including club president, and currently leads the Rotary Clubs of Kings County Charitable Foundation.

McNeil described him as a “humble” leader, equally at home rolling coins for a club fundraiser or speaking on television about the fate of Nova Scotia’s hemlock trees. “That passion he has — he puts something into it that you feel,” said McNeil.

Herman received the True Rotarian Award from local District Governor Don Sword and club president Stacey Scott Nykolyshyn.
