Rotarians have stepped forward to support members of the Deer Lake First Nation in northwestern Ontario after they were forced to flee their community due to wildfires.
The evacuees found allies in HIP board member Suzanne Grouette, District 6400 District Coordinator Peggy Little and District 7070 District Coordinator Bill Empey.
They reached out quickly to make sure those who fled felt comfortable in the city, including seeking to connect them with local Indigenous organizations.
As of Sunday, officials said the wildfire near Deer Lake First Nation is out of control and more than 1,500 square kilometres in size. The federal government said it will help with Ontario’s request for help.
