You have probably seen the “little libraries” in a neighbourhood near you. “Take a book, leave a book and spread the word that literacy is important for all”
Some Rotary districts have proposed a variety of challenges to local clubs to promote literacy and building community. With a little of sweat in the building of the weatherproof box, the movement has grown considerably.
The Rotary Club of Waterdown, ON placed a lending library in front of their meeting place. Prior to Sept 30th, National Day for Truth and Reconciliation and with club support, a committee purchased 8 adult books about Truth and Reconciliation and 4 books (including The Orange Shirt Story by Phyllis Webstad) for children from a local bookseller. A sticker was placed inside each book encouraging the community to read and share the books either by passing them on to friends and returning them to the Little Lending Library so someone else can read them. Photos were shared on the club’s facebook page and the books were all taken by the next day. There is one person who is watching for one of the books to be returned!
Well done!
