HIP District Co-Ordinators and Rotary District 7090 HIP Co-Chairs, Jim and Marjorie Dawson participated in a two day Habitat for Humanity build in the community of Chippewas of Nawash Unceded First Nation on the Bruce Peninsula.
In a remarkable display of unity and community spirit, John Bedell from Fort Erie organized a diverse group of volunteers to build homes on the reserve. Partnering with the Grey Bruce Habitat organization, this collaboration has already resulted in 19 new homes since 2016.
The need for new housing on the reserve is significant, driven by growing families and a surge in community returnees, a trend accelerated by the COVID pandemic. The project has received enthusiastic support from the community, with band councillors, the Chief, and the housing manager regularly visiting the site to greet the Habitat team and oversee the efforts of apprentice construction managers.
Despite the sweltering heat, two teams of eight worked diligently at two separate locations: one repurposing a former library into temporary housing for three families, and the other laying the foundation for a new two-bedroom home. When the team arrived, they were greeted with a freshly poured foundation, and over two days, they assembled most of the ICF Styrofoam block forms needed to pour the basement walls.
The experience was truly rewarding as the team, composed of individuals who initially did not know each other, came together to create something of lasting value. Their hard work and collaboration have made a tangible difference in the community.
