Ma Mawi Wi Chi Itata Centre in Winnipeg have been doing great outreach during the pandemic. They have chosen to be strong and the Ojibway phrase Ma Mawi Wi Chi Itata translates to “we all work together to help one another”. To date, 50,000 emergency kits have been delivered to children, youth and elders in the community. Well done!
Their work has also assisted all their elders who have been hit very hard physically and psychologically. Ma Mawi staff are ensuring they continue to be socially connected and make weekly deliveries of fresh food including delicious sandwiches, hygiene kits, puzzles and games to remind them they are not forgotten.
During COVID, youth are disproportionately being affected. Four youth and a staff member each week have been able to visit Windy Hill Community Training, Healing and Learning Centre on the east shore of Lake Winnipeg. Through the land, they have been clearing trails and pathways for future use by the community. Through access to education, tools and supports they will emerge strong and empowered.
